GOLDEN HORSESHOE BACK COUNTRY HORSEMEN, Lexington VA
In 1716 Gov. Alexander Spottswood commissioned a group of his daring friends to journey with him beyond the "Great Blue Wall," or the Blue Ridge Mountains. The first European settlers documented to make this trip, Spottswood's gentlemen adventurers chronicled their trek in a journal and claimed, with the usual toasts and musketry, all the land for the King. When they returned, full of tales about wonderful, fertile lands and breathtaking mountain vistas, the governor christened them "The Knights of the Golden Horseshoe." He presented each with a small golden horseshoe containing the words in Latin, "Behold, we have crossed mountains."

In their spirit, and with a love for the historic use of riding and pack stock here in Virginia, the Golden Horseshoe BCH was born.

Begun in 2003 with a group of trail riders, packers and mountain adventurers who wanted to get together to share directions for the trails they knew, the venture organized under the BCH banner with determination to not only volunteer to keep the trails built, open and maintained, but to work together to keep the historic use of equines on trails for future generations and to encourage more use, and more informed use, of trails on public lands.

Members hail from Harrisonburg to Roanoke, and ride in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, the Shenandoah National Park, and various state and local parks and trail systems.

Current and upcoming volunteer projects include: Glenwood Horse Trail maintenance and rebuilding, Douthat State Park equine trail system and accompanying systems in the Warm Springs and James River Ranger Districts; Todd Camp are trail reclamation project in the Dry River Ranger District; Leave No Trace ethics educational programs for youth and others.
